The Employee Health Nurse Practitioner is a part of the Employee Health Team and is responsible for reviewing clinical history, providing the physical examination, making the diagnosis, and treating work related injuries and illnesses of current and active Legacy employees.  The Employee Health Nurse Practitioner also provides health education and guidance for Legacy employees and is a medical resource for the Employee Health team.  Works in collaboration with the team and seeks the advice of the employee health physician advisor or consulting physician whenever a case falls outside the scope of his/her expertise. 

 

The Employee Health Nurse Practitioner may be involved in consultation, research activities, preceptorship of students, and development of patient education programs. The Employee Health Nurse practitioner collaborates with the Legacy Infection Control team, the LHS Safety Program, the Ergonomics Department, the Integrated Leave Program, and other departments as needed to promote a safe and healthy work environment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Education:

As required by licensure.

 

Experience:

Minimum two years’ experience in Employee Health and /or Occupational Health setting preferred.  Five years’ experience in emergency or urgent care setting will be considered in lieu of Occupational Health experience.

 

Licensure/Certification:

Current applicable state RN license required.

National certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) required.

Current applicable state license as a Nurse Practitioner with Prescriptive Privileges (NP-PP) required.

Basic Life Support (CPR).

Board Certified or successful completion of Board Certification for Occupational Health Nursing within 3 years of employment required.

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assesses the physical condition of occupationally injured or ill employees by performing physical examinations including ordering, interpreting and evaluating diagnostic tests and obtaining medical histories. Assumes ongoing responsibility for each patient from discovery of the disorder to recovery. Provides guidance and referral for non-occupational health issues.
  • Formulates the medical plan and prognosis based on patient's condition.
  • Consults with physician(s) regarding patient health care plans and treatment.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Performs selected invasive procedures for therapeutic and/or diagnostic reasons within scope of validated competence.
  • Initiates and/or recommends medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy, taking responsibility for such therapy when performed prior to consultation with a physician.
  • Complies with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. Initiates and maintains required records and legal documents. Updates and maintains accurate Employee Health files and database records.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Counsels patients, families and significant others with consideration of literacy and culture about health and illness and promotes health maintenance.
  • Establishes and documents the health care plan and prognosis, maintaining records of each case that are sufficiently complete for any physician reviewing them to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.
  • Determines when the patient has recovered from the disorder and releases the patient.
  • Performs new hire employee health assessments, reviews immunization status, and facilitates drug screening process to ensure a new employee’s ability to perform the physical functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Plans, tracks, and administers the immunization and TB testing programs, and evaluates for compliance.
  • Collaborates with
  • Legacy Infection Control Team to monitor communicable disease outbreaks, providing and facilitating immunizations and other prophylaxis to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Ergonomics to provide general workstation evaluation and recommend alterations in workstation ergonomics as appropriate. 
  • Safety, Infection Control and other departments to ensure compliance with OSHA, JCAHO and other regulatory body standards.
  • Manager, team members, and other multidisciplinary staff to identify work place hazards and implement measures to eliminate and/or minimize identified risks.
  • Actively participates in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of:
  • health promotion, screening, and surveillance programs.
  • occupational and environmental health and safety education and training programs.
  • Remains current with federal and state regulations regarding immunization, communicable disease, and injury prevention and treatment. Maintains knowledge of current treatment modalities and standards of care.
  • Demonstrates and fosters compliance with laws and workplace policies regarding worksite safety.
  • Educates employees on risk reduction strategies associated with occupational and environmental health and safety hazards.
  • Participates in committees and work groups regarding policy and procedure development and revision.
  • Knowledgeable of internal resources and capabilities which might be used in the event of a local or regional emergency and/or disaster incident.
  • Compiles and reports data to the Safety Committee and Infection Control Committee regarding Employee Health issues.
